Making gin!

For months (years?) my friend Lauren and I have talked about making gin. We finally did it!! Turns out you can make gin from vodka-so easy! Lauren bought juniper berries in Washington (and really, all the ingredients) and we got together to make gin. All we had to figure out was how.

Literally the day we planned to meet, I googled how to make gin from vodka and found tons of recipes. I also had found this creepy illustration when I went to a gin distillery, and had to send it to Lauren. There are so many options and variations, it’s really dependent on the maker and their preferences. So Lauren and I sort of just decided to go with the flow. We were also mixing in bottles that had no measurements so we had to do some intense (okay, okay, basic) math to figure out about how much vodka we had and how much of each botanical to add. So the recipes below are for about 750 ml of vodka, but we used less for each recipe. The flavors turned out amazing, but you may use a bit more since we were just shy of 750 ml (closer to 600 ml I think).

For each recipe, we added the botanicals in a bottle, then added the vodka. Lauren put each bottle in a closet (or another cool, dark place) for about 24 hours. Then we strained the mixture to get the botanicals out. Many sites recommended that after 24 hours you taste the gin and adjust the flavor as needed, including adding orange or lemon zest (without the pith/white stuff) and letting it sit for another 12-24 hours in a cool, dark place. Lauren and I felt like we didn’t need to add zest, and that we’d be drinking the gin with lime anyway, or that we’d prefer to add fresh orange or lemon zest. So we skipped that. So in 24 hours, we had 3 bottles of delicious, refreshing gin.
